Bethesda Terrace and Fountain: Central Park - NYC
Take a stroll through poets walk (zee Mall) and end up at Bethesda Terrace. A beautiful fountain in summer and very fun to play in during winter; constructed in 1859-64. A two level terrace connected by a “grand” staircase. Funny thing is I never walked in the Lower Terrace which looks pretty awesome in other people’s pictures. I’ll have to snap that next time I’m around. The Fountain was commissioned to Emma Stebbins, the first women to receive a commission by New York. A winged angel a top the fountain with four four cherubs that represent Temperance, Purity, Health and Peace. The angel holds a lilly in her left and and blesses the water below with the right. Its had its hey day and its low points, and seems to be just doing fine now.
